Learn How Lord Ganesha Came to Be the Elephant God.

Lord Ganesha is one of the most respected and loved Gods in the Hindu faith. His wisdom is unparalleled as is his strength. He is intelligent and just. He is the younger brother of Lord Kartikeya and the son of Shiva and Parvati. He is the Supreme Lord, someone who brings you wisdom and prosperity through his worship. Lord Ganesha is a revered writer, an artist and an excellent musician. You can find several artistic Brass Idols of Hindu Gods, especially Lord Ganesha, in many Indian households.

Lord Ganesha has an elephant head, although he was not born with it. Goddess Parvati gave birth to him in the absence of Lord Shiva. Once, Goddess Parvati wanted someone to guard the door while she took a bath. Hence, she created a young boy out of turmeric that she had applied to herself. The turmeric along with the earthly particles of her skin formed a dough and she breathed life into it through her element of conscious energy, giving birth to Lord Ganesha. As he was brought to life, Parvati asked him to stand guard for her.

As he stood guard, Lord Shiva approached and tried to go in to visit Parvati. The young boy stood in between and wouldn’t let Lord Shiva go through. This enraged the Lord and he cut his head off. Upon seeing this, Goddess Parvati was furious with her husband and declared that the creations of all the universe will be destroyed if her boy isn’t brought back to life. And when he is brought back to life, he must be one who is worshipped in the beginning of everything, she declared.

Lord Shiva repented killing the boy with his trident. He sent out a search party to bring back a suitable head, of a man or animal. His army couldn’t bring back anything hence Shiva had to venture out himself. On his search he found an elephant. Hence, he brought back the head of an elephant and put it on the young boy’s body. Through mantras and hymns, the boy was brought to life and thus Lord Ganesha was born. He is also known as Gajanana, which in Sanskrit translates to Elephant-headed God.

This is one of the myths about how Lord Ganesha got his elephant head. The elephant head symbolizes many aspects of life. The large head talks about Lord Ganesha’s wisdom, intelligence and thinking prowess. The big ears symbolize the importance of listening. The keen, small eyes represent focus and concentration. It is easy to find Brass Ganesha Idols and devotion to Lord Ganesha in our households. He is worshipped before anybody else and is regarded as the most beloved Gods in the Hindu religion.
